It was my first day at Farnell. I was early.. in fact very early. (hehe, expected! but amelia was earlier. haha)
When I first heard the name Farnell, the very first thought was just some kind of ulu factory with a little office situated somewhere in the productions area, or probably just a little desk amidst the manufacturing works. boO hoo, i thought, yet nothing beats sitting at home to shake legs. (you could get arthritis for not shaking in the right way, or for 1 month;)
So I carry my 'arthritic' legs and stepped out of the house to see.... the world. oh mummy look! there's an aeroplane! x)
When we first entered the office area on the 5th floor, it was all an open area. They have all the different segments of operations on the same floor, the different major departments. So you can guess how big the area is. Some of the top level management share the same floor as us; well, they do have their own rooms, but I guess the co. adopts a really transparent policy as every space is visible from one perspective, even the rooms they have are partitioned by glass walls and glass doors. (except for the toilet)
Something that caught my eyes were the 3 clocks on the wall; showing the times of New York, London and Singapore. waaaa. It was then that I almost choked on my saliva.. I shouldn't have belittled the co. And true enough, after surveying the environment, I realise they are a MNC. They are a foreign subsidiary of the parent in UK. Some group I've yet to check out. In Asia, they have branches in Malaysia, India, HK and China as well. They deal in the business of Electronic parts, such as cables. They produce parts for coys like 3M if I m not wrong.
Our top mgmt consists mainly of the caucasians. (cOol). so is my Director! oh man, I am quite excited on meeting him. hehe. yea, i havent met him. (kinda funny that the asians will switch their accent when they talk to the caucasians. haa.) It was Jenny, my immed contact there, who orientate us and taught me alot of stuffs. It was an interesting place. Jenny resembles Lydia Sum. The figure, the laughter, her heart. Not as though I know her very well, haa but she is those who laughs alot and interacts alot with her staff. Nice. She makes a good HR Executive. Ok that's not the point. Because she is so friendly, i got to benefit;) i get to see MR grange upfront.. CLOSE. ---cheeky.
The 'freshie' experience I had today was the franking mails! oh man, I didnt know that coys have to frank their own mails! I thought this is to be done by the man at Singapore Post, Fedex or whatever. haa. so new to me. and Jenny repeatedly repeated repeatedly that Franking machine is such an intelligent machine. And I kept nodding my head; couldnt help but agree with her. (though i know i smarter;) I guess that must be one of her favourite things in the workplace. I learnt how to type POs too. It is just different in every coy. I hope i'd remember and do it right the next time. I also got into contacts with cheques from many countries, and corporate banks in Singapore which I barely heard of and knew little of its existence. Ya, i only got to touch them, sadly, and have to pass to the ppl at accounts to do the rest.
At the end of the day, Jenny brought me to 3rd level where premier Farnell is and where the production takes place too. It's a bigger place and the factory is air cond as well. I just love the way they operate. Very systematic and organised. It's just different. When we returned, I learnt how to pick up calls. oh the phone just kills me. Of all times, when Jenny went back to her room, the phone had to ring. Worse, I didnt even hear it, just saw the thing flashing. Amelia and I were so frozen there. Then I tried to pick up the phone, but there wasn't anything! So I just tried any buttons.. A then B then transfer then this n that.. phew! I transferred the call to Jenny. haa. SLY! That was the advantage of first day at work, dont know anything just transfer to Jenny. But i doubt i can do the same for later on.
And it's 2:58am now, 5 more hours to work. The thing is, I hear that mommie is gonna come out anytime with a cane in her hands. I dont want to endanger or become extinct. n I certainly wont like to have char kway teow at this hour.
